One word to describe yourself?Blessed Your own physical feature you are most proud of?My strongest feature has always been abs |
How did you get into fitness/bodybuilding?My journey in the fitness industry began back in 2005. I had dreamed of being a figure competitor for at least three years at that point in time. I was a personal trainer who was obsessed with Oxygen magazine, but had no clue how these girls were achieving their amazing physiques. I was desperate to find out, and determined to be one of them. I had been a certified personal trainer since 2002, and from 2004-2005 I worked on a cruise ship as the fitness director. As exciting a time as this was, it was also a time where I wasn’t eating healthy and spent far too much time in the crew bar. At the end of my one year voyage, I left the ship carrying an extra 30 pounds or so and tipped the scales in the 170’s, the heaviest I had ever been in my life. I couldn’t believe I had let this happen. I was so upset with myself and was finally ready to lose all my excuses and change my life. On July 5, 2005 I signed up to compete in my first show which was about 18 weeks away. I had a long journey ahead of me, but I was ready. I changed everything, my eating, my training, I was totally determined that I was going to finally reach this goal. To my delight, I shed about 40 pounds, stepped on stage at my first Figure competition (the NPC John Sherman Classic) and won first place in my class. I was hooked. I knew that this was my destiny. Over the course of the next few years I continued to compete. The fitness modeling side of things came about as a natural result of training for competitions. In 2007 I decided to make the switch to competing in actual fitness model competitions as they were a good fit for my physique and my personality. I began competing with the WBFF in 2008 and truly found my stride. I won my pro card and also a World Champion title that year. This organization really opened a lot of doors for me within the industry. It was also in 2008, that my fiancée Micah LaCerte and I met! We actually met at the Olympia 2008 and have been together ever since. We started a business together called Hitch Fit, we have a one on one training studio here in Kansas City, and also offer online training programs worldwide at www.hitchfit.com . In a nutshell, that’s how I first got involved with fitness, though I still feel that my journey is just beginning as Micah and I continue to compete as well as build and grow our own fitness business. |

What food can’t you go without?Well I don’t think there’s one food that I love so much that I wouldn’t be able to cut it out if that’s what it took to get in top condition. I guess that the meal it would be really tough to go without would be my oatmeal in the morning, it’s really my favorite meal of the day and I get to have it even when I’m in competition training, so I guess that would be the toughest for me to cut out. Honestly, it’s all mind over matter, if I had to eliminate that, I would! Famous fitness icon/bodybuilder you would most like to have coffee/protein shake with?Well, I suppose that would have to be Arnold Schwarzenegger. |
What are your workouts like?My workouts are always different. I rarely do the same thing two times in a row! I do split routines, so I train 5-6 days per week hitting 1-2 body parts per day. My workouts are usually brief, anywhere from 15-25 minutes (except for leg days which can run a little longer), I like to get in the gym, bust out my workout, and get out. I like to include a variety of exercises in each workout that will hit whichever muscle group I’m working from multiple angles. I do a lot of super sets, drop sets, tabata training and pause rep training so that I’m always doing something new and different. What is a typical daily routine for you?Wake up. Do devotions. Tell Micah I love him. Make breakfast (do cardio first if I’m in training). Check emails and Facebook. Train clients. Head to the grocery store, post office and bank for errands, and then to the gym for strength training. In the evenings I usually work from home on online training programs for our Hitch Fit clients worldwide, or work on one of our other Hitch Fit projects that we’ve got cooking! |

What keeps you motivated to stay in shape?I’m motivated by several things. First is the fact that I believe from the bottom of my heart that God placed me in the fitness industry for a purpose. I’m motivated by knowing that people look up to me as a fitness role model, knowing that they look to me for that inspiration keeps me on my toes! I’m also motivated by opportunity. Micah and I are building a global brand with Hitch Fit, and that is so exciting, but part of that success comes from Micah and I both walking the walk and not just talking the talk! What is your eating plan like?On and off season I eat anywhere from 5-7 meals per day. If I’m more active, I eat more. Off season I eat balanced, higher carb intake, higher calories and more frequent cheat meals, though I keep my eating about 85% clean so that I don’t let my body get more than about 5-7 pounds from where I would want to compete at. On season, I cut out any of the extras that I add in during down time, and go back to making sure I’m eating on time every time and with the right portion sizes. The staples of my diet are what you would expect, both on and off season, lean protein, healthy carbohydrates, healthy fats and loads of water! |
What is the most challenging thing you deal with about consistently staying in top shape?I don’t really feel like staying in shape is a challenge any more. I feel like I’ve found a good balance now after being in this industry for several years. I have periods where I work very hard to be in peak condition, and then other times where I give my body a much needed break. Nutrition wise, I don’t mind eating clean the majority of the time, it’s become such a part of my lifestyle that it doesn’t seem like a challenge to me anymore. During my “off” season times, I allow myself time to enjoy foods that wouldn’t be part of a training program, but I don’t have issues with competition dieting because I know it’s not forever. I’d say the biggest challenge I face is when I’m in training and trying to juggle a growing and thriving business while still making sure I get my own training and meals in on time. Those periods are the most difficult simply because business and responsibility doesn’t slow down just because I have to go into hard training! |

Body part of a guy you find most sexy?Micah has great arms that I think are super sexy, he’s also got amazing calves and those are pretty hot too! What is the biggest fitness (weight loss, work out, diet) myth you encounter in the fitness industry every day?The number one myth that I encounter on a regular basis is that there is a pill or exercise that can be done to achieve six pack abs. I think that I say on a regular basis that abs are made in the kitchen and not in the gym! |

Top 3 tips for people who want to get in shape?1) You must be willing and ready to change your nutrition habits if you are serious about changing your body and getting in great shape. No matter of exercise or workouts will suffice if you don’t also change the way that you eat! 2) Don’t procrastinate. Transforming your body is going to take time, there are no quick fixes, no miracle pills and no magical crash diets that will change your body for good for life. Getting into great shape will not happen overnight, so begin your journey today and focus every day on making choices that will get you closer to your goals. 3) Plan for a lifestyle change. I think often people believe that getting in shape means doing something for a month or three months, and then going back to exactly what they were doing before. It’s very important that fitness is a lifestyle, exercising and eating right are not fads, they are habits that you need to incorporate into your daily routine and plan to do for the rest of your life if you want to get results and maintain them. |
What has been your biggest accomplishment in the fitness field?Well, I’ve been very blessed in my fitness journey. I’ve got a couple of accomplishments that I’m very proud of. I’ve won 7 competitions over the last five years, including two World Championships. I achieved my WBFF Pro card and will be hosting one of the first WBFF US events in 2011. I achieved my fitness dream of becoming an Oxygen fitness model and have had the amazing opportunity of shooting for them and being featured by them numerous times. But I think the biggest accomplishment overall is what Micah and I are building with Hitch Fit. The reason this is the greatest is because it’s more than just something that I have personally done. Through this system, which is growing at such a rapid pace, we have had a hand in the transformations of so many people, both here in our hometown of Kansas City, and worldwide. I’m not just talking about weight loss, we’ve literally seen these people change their lives, change their choices, and change their destiny. It’s an absolutely amazing feeling to be a part of this, and I can’t wait to see where we go as it continues to build and thrive! |

Your favorite ab exercise?Funny question after answering the last one! I think it’s most important to stress that it doesn’t matter what workout you do if you’re not eating right! You can have an amazing workout that will help to strengthen your core, and build your abdominal muscles, however, if you still have layers of fat covering those muscle groups, you will never see visual abdominals. As far as training my abs goes, though they are my strongest feature, they are actually my LEAST favorite to train! When I do work them I stick with pretty basic movements such as regular crunch either on a bench or a ball, hanging leg raises, planks and bicycles. |
