Mr. Carvell, I don’t get it. Bigger muscle means more muscle cells, more muscle cells can work better therefore produce more strength, right? The strength come from the muscle, don’t they?
Yes and No. More muscle will mean more strength but more strength will not always mean more muscle. I can drag this out over a 20 page answer for you but you can become stronger without adding muscle. Power lifters Vs bodybuilder are the perfect example. Power lifters can lift a lot more weight than bodybuilders but they are not normally as big ( They are not small either so they do have muscle to back up their power ). But getting stronger also has to do with neurological factors. This means teaching your muscle and making your neural connections stronger. That is why free weights can sometimes spark muscle growth and strength if you have been doing machine for a while. Like I said I can go on and on about this but in short, you can get stronger without adding the same amount of muscle as someone who is out and out working on building bigger muscles.
Thanks, Peter! excellent exercise
Im a slim women.5’2 and weight 112 lbs,… i workout 5days… But i cant seem to get abs to the to appeal… Help..
Hi Mr. Carvell, although I have big bicep but why my friends with much smaller bicep have much more greater strength? How can I improve my strength?
This is very common. Bigger does not mean stronger. To train strength do low reps ( 3 tp 6 ) with heavier weights.
