When I get new clients and I start to look at their diet programs I seem to always come across a few regular problems. Sure they might be sticking to a good diet but the fact of the matter is that sometimes you still do the things that can have a positive impact on your results incorrectly! I call these the DEADLY DIET SINS because if you get them wrong, they will kill your abs pretty quickly!
Today I am going to reveal the first 3 of these 6 common diet mistakes that many people are still making and that could be the reason you still can’t see your 6 pack!
DO the basics, correctly consistently! You have heard me say that a million times because that is what gets you results! Yet you still get people who are obsessed with counting every calorie, eating ZERO fat, the exact amount of carbs etc etc. Listen, sure you need to keep an eye on what you eat and have an idea of how many calories you should be eating, but you don’t need to get obsessed with it as it will drive you crazy! NOBODY is perfect when it comes to their diets.
The good thing is that you don’t need to be. As long as you follow the basic diet rules and then fine tune it to work for you, you should get some pretty amazing results. I have never counted calories in my life but have hit ever specific deadline for a photo or DVD shoot. And most of my clients , especially the ones that were counting calories, only really started to get some results when they stopped stressing about being so perfect all the time and rather focused on doing the basics, correctly consistently!
Yes, you still get people who do this! And let’s face it, on the surface it looks like a good idea. You eat less, so you take in fewer calories and so you should lose weight right? Not exactly! See if you cut your calories too drastically your body is going to shut down so to speak. It is going to go into survival mode after a few days and try and hang onto everything it can to survive, including your fat. Eventually you are going to find it dam near impossible to get rid of that fat as your body just won’t let go of it as it is trying to keep you alive!
A Much better way is to rather start cutting your calories at a slower rate, maybe just 200 to 500 calories per day. Make up the extra calories that you want to lose through your workouts which is also going to help you increase your metabolic rate and so help you burn fat throughout the day.
An extension of the STARVING SIN is people cutting their carbohydrate intake really low, sometimes cutting carbs completely out of their diet, BIG MISTAKE!
Now there are many problems with cutting carbs but for me personally the biggest of them all is that a low carb diet is not sustainable! Sure you might get some great results for a week or two but after that you will have very little energy, your mental focus will start to decline and your body is going to start looking for some energy to keep going and the only thing left is going to be fat and PROTEIN. And so the downwards spiral starts…
First you start to lose muscle and that in turn decreases your metabolism. Your energy is now getting so low that you don’t even want to get out of bed anymore, not to mention go do a workout. You feel nauseas and I won’t even get into the smells that are coming from your body!
And what does all of this mean? It means you will soon be STOPPING your so called diet and go back to what you used to eat because you just can’t stand it anymore and soon you have picked up double the weight you lost over the last few weeks.
A much more intelligent way is to USE carbs to provide your body with energy when it needs it , like before a workout, and cut it when you don’t need it so that it doesn’t end up getting stored as fat, like late at night.
Carbs are not bad for you, you just need to learn how to make it work for you and once you do, you will drop fat fast and continue to drop fat for as long as you want because you will have the energy to continue doing your workouts and living your daily life!
