3 Crucial Reasons to Never Skip Breakfast

Breakfast is a strange meal. While there’s a lot of cultural difference between lunch & dinner when you travel to different countries, it’s still not as big as the differences you’ll find when it comes to breakfast.

Some people eat an entirely sweet breakfast. Others, it’s all savory. Some people have a cappuccino and almost nothing else. Other countries eat a protein-and-fat-filled plate.

But there’s a pretty strong pull, from work, life, and the way our food choices are setup — to just skip breakfast.

Here are three reasons that’s not a good idea.

#1 — Your Blood Sugar Drops During the Night

This is nothing to do with diabetes or anything like that — this is the simple fact that your blood sugar drops because you’ve just slept for 6, 7, or 8 hours.

Why does it matter? Simple. Because if you’re going to be training hard towards the kick-ass body you want, there’s no way you’ll be able to do it if you start your day off with extremely low blood sugar. Our bodies need some calories, some energy to get us going.

This is also one of the (many) reasons I advocate eating 5-6 small meals during the day. When you’re really training hard, just slamming back 3 big meals isn’t the most efficient way to get energy to your body on a regular basis. The day is too long for that kind of system, which evolved for completely different cultural reasons that don’t fit exactly with the rigorous training of today.

#2 — Why Would You Skip an Already-Small Meal?

The whole point of breakfast is to give your body a nice nutritious start to the day, kick start your metabolism, and get you going with your 5 or 6 small meals.

Big breakfasts are for hangovers or brunches on special occasions. Even if you’re a 3-meal-per-day kind of person, it’s rare to find someone that really loves a massive breakfast every day. It’s far more likely you’ll find someone who, because of the way their morning routine is organized, simply skips breakfast and waits for a big lunch.

But there’s no point doing this — breakfast is already configured perfectly to ease you in, on a daily basis, to this good habit of many small meals throughout the day. While we need a boost in our blood sugar after a night’s sleep, we often don’t have a massive appetite in the morning.

Instead of using that lack of appetite as a reason to skip breakfast, use it to foster a smarter, smaller meal.

#3 — Habits and Routine are Crucial

One of the best ways to get yourself to an amazing body is by establishing such rock-solid habits that they start to become second nature. When eating a smart, small breakfast seems completely normal to you, you’ll have a lot more mental space free to concentrate on more important stuff — your workout that day, your job, your relationships.

If you make sure your breakfast becomes a specific habit or routine, it becomes easier and easier to start treating your other meals throughout the day in the same way.

Breakfast is the most “malleable” of all meals — lots of people skip it, some people always put it off, others over-do it. If you put your foot down and establish a good, solid set of habits when it comes to breakfast, you’ll find the same works for the other 4-5 meals you’re going to eat during the day, too.

You never want to eat anything with a lot of simple sugars. So what you really want is something with a lot of good carbs like Oats for example. But your breakfast must also have a protein and good fats in it!
